'El encuentro': new CD with bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi

On 20 May 1935 Dino Saluzzi was born in Campo Santo in the Argentinian province of Salta. In Februari 2009 Dino Saluzzi and Anja Lechner made recordings for a CD together with The Metropole Strings led by Jules Buckley. This CD, 'El Encuentro' has been released in May 2010 to celebrate Dino’s 75th birthday.

Great fame

At an early age Dino Saluzzi had a keen interest in the bandoneón. He earned a living as a member of the orchestra of Radio El Mundo. He also played in smaller, sometimes more jazz-georientated ensembles. He developed his own stile and virtuosity with which he acquired great fame in the Argentian folklore and avant-garde music. His versatility resulted in the collaboration with various artists such as Charlie Haden, Tomasz Stanko, Charlie Mariano and Al di Meola.

Anja Lechner

Dino’s experiments with the Rosamunde Quartett were remarkble. They led to the CD 'Kultrum' (1998). Afterwards together with Anja Lechner, the cellist of this quartet, he formed  hij a duo. He also went on extensive tours and recorded the album 'Ojos Negros'. This was declared ‘album of the year’ in 2007 by jazz magazine Down Beat .

'El Encuentro'

In February 2009 Dino Saluzzi, his brother Felix Saluzzi and Anja Lechner come to Hilversum. Here they prepared themselves with the The Metropole Strings for a concert at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam on 13 February 2009. The concert was part of the documentary series 3x tango of NPS and Radio 6. Permanent guest conductor Jules Buckley led the musicians in new compositions by Saluzzi for orchestra which were performed and recorded live.

'El Encuentro' is a CD containing encounters between many cultures which Saluzzi came across during his long career and blended into his own style. The music is melancholic, full of restrained passion, and alternated with beautiful solos on bandoneón, cello and the saxophone of brother Felix Saluzzi.

'El Encuentro' marks the recording debut of the Metropole Orchestra and Jules Buckley on the ECM label. In 'de Volkskrant' critic Frank van Herk awarded **** (four stars). According to him 'enriches Saluzzi the comntemporary chamber music with injections from the depths of the tradition [ of the bandoneón, red.]."
